while the US government did put out a ban on bullion, at the time very few actually handed in their gold as far as I can tell. Most just stashed it for later. Its not like the government went door to door, they just made it illegal to buy and sell it, and even than people still did under the table.

Back in the 1900s at the Bullion Pit at Likely BC, the mine kept having issues with theft. So the manager said fuck it and had all their bullion shipped each month in these giant bullet shaped ingots. Theft stopped.
