Gold and Silver were both banned in the 30s by FDR so that he could generate massive amounts of cash for infrastructure projects with gold "bought back" from the population. It was supposed to be a forced regulation, all gold and silver could be confiscated from you if you did not had it over willingly, but 90% of the population didnt actually hand in most of their PMs, they simply were stashed away and not used until things returned to normal. governments dont need to restrict networks to end crypto. if owning crypto got you prison time crypto would no longer be a threat
