Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. High output is scratching that internal itch we all have for finding purpose, once all the lower areas have been covered.

We no longer live like peasants working all day for our next meals, so now most people have the lower rungs if the hierarchy satisfied. This leaves us with too much free time to become dissonant with the more internal & intangible tiers. Really is a sink of swim arrangement nowadays.

This. If it doesn't fulfill the base of maslow's hierarchy (safety and physiology), it's unnecessary. Prostitution is more important than a movie theater, for example.

Get a clue and have sex (not that you have the free time to do that KEK)
Neets are at the top of the pyramid.

because you need money to buy food/shelter/fulfillment other needs of maslows hierarchy

if you subsistence farm nowadays one could argue that you dont need money, but in reality you still do need money to pay for taxes every year (or the federal government sends you directly to jail)

money is a means to an end, and if the economy is down, then some needs are going to go unfulfilled, (or less fulfilled than they "normally" are)

we have moved past the animal kingdom's rules where physical force (muscles, fangs, venom) and raw materials (food, shelter) are needed to live, instead we use money as a proxy for and a tool to receive (strength, food, fame, power, whatever)

the game has not changed, but the method of playing it has, thanks to the unofficial social contract that everyone in a society follows
