So it seems like every Redditor who's glanced at r/personalfinance knows about index funds. Are index funds really the way go though?

So i always read all these great investing strategies that are pretty much all "put it in the stock index and some bonds on vanguard"

but i live in germoney

what is the equilalent here?

also, i checked some gov bonds, they are near 0% return, does that even make sense then? should i just go into stocks then? i mean, i also checked eurozone inflation and its 0,2% (which surprised me), so basically how the FUCK can a eurofag start saving money for retirement?

I'm still relatively new to the market. I just started reading up on it and learning a few weeks ago, before everything started to drop, out of an interest in getting involved. I'd like to try investing some money after the current situation bottoms out, and since I still feel that I have a lot to learn I am thinking I should play it safe for now and invest in a fund.

I currently have about $6000 sitting in a bank making a minuscule interest, and another $7000 or so in a checking account. I'm looking at Vanguard, but my problem is that they have such a wide selection of funds available that I am really not sure what to select.

I'm hoping for some advice on what to go with to make the most of my money. Something that I can easily sell if I want the money or start to see another downturn in the market. Or if I am off the right track then advice on where I should be looking. Which option would you recommend and what sort of return might I expect in a year (generally)?

/uk-biz/, help me cut some fat from my investments. At the moment I've got about £2k socked away in a high-risk Nutmeg fund (starting out!); however, I could do better given the 0.5% annual charge, and that I know it's mostly invested in Vanguard funds anyway.

I'd prefer to let the dosh grow in a moderate-risk Vanguard LifeStrategy fund that I control instead, but sadly personally investing directly with VG isn't possible. Is there anywhere you could recommend that doesn't have a ginormous annual fee, array of hidden charges and such that still offers Vanguard funds?

Literally all I'm going to do is push the spare cash I have at the end of the month into the fund, but I've no objection to quarterly or semi-annual top-ups instead, for efficiency's sake.

Hey /biz/.

I'm currently living in France and most of my savings are in what we called an "assurance-vie". It's protected and offers around 2% per year (next year it's around 1,5%ish).

As it's very low, how much on average would a SP&500 Vanguard fund will earn ?

Is it "risk free" (no 50% drawdown in a day) and what are the costs ?

Thank you.

Can anyone here make me confident about putting money into a mutual fund?

I am a natural pessimist and cannot make myself confident enough to take the leap and invest.

Also, any tips or suggestions for me? I am an ausfag by the way.

Best Vanguard Mutual fund to park $50,000 in for 20 years. May need to sell some shares at some point for home repair or down payment on a car. I don't like risk as I don't want to lose the principal, so modest returns are expected.

I'm leaning toward the Wellington VWELX: anyone have a better suggestion?

Why does everyone on /biz/ love Vanguard to much ?? Their name always seems to appear in most investment threads. Is there a reason ?
