Bottom often come 6-9 months before the economy bottoms out. You can wait for that if you want to play it safe, but trying to call the bottom as a bear is even more dangerous than calling it as a bull.

Think of it like this, if you were on a desert island and someone handed you a bunch of shiny but worthless rocks you should tell them to go fuck themselves because paper is a lot easier to carry around.

If you're shorting or buying puts, and it's not part of a hedging strategy, you're straight gambling and NOT investing.
If you gamble and lose, and then blame the casino, you're a pathetic sore loser who chose to play a game he didn't understand.

No one is forcing you into the casino. No one is dragging you to the table of a complicated game you don't understand.

Maybe try to buy a few companies that you think have a bright future while they're trading at a discount? There's a few I have my eye on, and will buy if they go below certain price points.
