Recently I read about how certain german/austrian families achieved to preserve most of their wealth from before ww2 to the founding of the Bundesrepublik.
In 1945 Germany was de facto "gold free" and the currency had collapsed once again, however miraculously some people did not start at zero when the government introduced the Deutsche Mark in 1948, they started with lots of capital. Those people prepared themselves long before 1936 (gold ban) and kept their mouths shut, they didnt use precious metals to trade in times of crisis either, they waited until there was a new government, currency and stable political system.
