The Opium wars were started partly due to the Chinese demanding silver payment for their exports.

Since there wasn't much interest in western goods, this led to a trade deficit and silver flowing out of Britain into China. So instead we invaded under false pretences as per usual to enforce Opium upon them.

Their war reparations were paid in silver too, so the British recouped what they lost.
