Value of goods and currency is relative. When an exchange happens is because what the other person gives up is of less value than what he obtains. Both parties have a net gain.

A dollar for a can of soda might be too much if you already have a pallet with 300 cans sitting in your store. But for the guy who has gone for a jog in the midst of summer after running ten miles the dollar means nothing compared to the hydration the drink has to offer to him. It's the same for every other possible exchange.
