I get into cycles of research without ever deciding on how to allocate my funds - whether to spread them across several projects, or just go all into one and hope for the exit pump.

what are some obvious, no-brainer plays this cycle?

Relying on legal frameworks is just kicking the can down the road. Instead of McFatFuck, you have to trust a different set of "people" who at the highest level will use the very thing that's supposed to protect you, to fuck you, just in the same way.

The only real answer is ironically what this entire space is supposed to be predicated upon, which are advanced systems of assurance that allow us to not have to trust each other, ie; smartcontracts etc. But as of right now, all of that seems to just be smoke that's being blown up all of our assholes, and I say that as a 5 digit LINK holder since 2017. The SDL situation is truly some subhuman judas behavior and I hope that Horserimmer and all involved will too eventually get their comeuppance. But who knows, maybe this is all like one of those fucked up mayan human sacrifice situations wherein the mayans would burn some portion of their wealth, be it human beings or otherwise, in order to make them less attractive targets to competing tribes and cities, thereby making it more likely to keep their remaining wealth, as opposed to being raided and potentially losing all of their wealth as a consequence. In the end I hope that both SDL cucks and us LINK cucks will reap greater rewards down the line than we otherwise would have things not have turned out the way that did so far. Hopium no copium.
