It's pretty complicated but there are a couple things that are important right now.
Before the crash the market was way overvalued, like absurdly so, some seem to think it was the result of passive investing from a very high number of retail traders/401k/IRA owners inflating the price of securities.
We had a very long bull market ever since the recovery from the crash in 2008, it was long overdue for a correction. We're roughly at the level of an appropriate correction right now.
There are various other issues, mostly having to do with the fed's methods of market stabilization failing, and them blowing their entire load trying to stop a correction.
Now we're at the point where the Fed is nearly out of ammo, and we're still going down, they blew it because they couldn't let boomers feel the brunt of the passive investment ponzi scheme.
At this point, we're looking at a recession at minimum, and it is entirely the fault of boomers.
