I don’t understand economics or investing very well. My father never taught me.

I make 40,000 a year before taxes, and I put 5,500 into a Roth IRA. I put around $200 from each paycheck into my 403b. I have a target retirement fund with vanguard that has 100,000 in it.

I have about 140,000 in retirement and I’m 34.

What I don’t understand is my parents said they invest their money, and use some of the dividends to buy things like cars. I don’t understand how to do this. Everything in my target retirement fund is done for me, which is why I chose it.

I read a Bogelheads book, and Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. I feel dumb that I can’t understand this. I have Dyscalculia, which is math dyslexia. I’m not dumb, but I have trouble reading clocks and counting coins. I just can’t understand finance and it’s frustrating. I’m very cautious with my money as a result, and am good about saving and not buying crap.
