If my net worth has pretty much stayed the same for a year even though I've been paying rent and taxes and shit, does that mean I'm doing well or just stagnating? I don't have any debt so my money just sits there

Could someone explain put buying to me in caveman terms? I'm looking to try my first options play with AMPY because it's stupid cheap and potentially less risky, but I don't understand the options numbers. The market price for AMPY right now is 1.27, and I think it could go down before going up, so wouldn't buying puts be a way to make money off of it? Why is the lowest put price $2.50? Should I be looking at the break even price? For example, an August 21 $7.50 put is $6.25 today. What in the world could someone do with that? Would I be out money if I actually bought a put, and how would I take profits?
