You're right that it's slow and expensive. And yeah, scaling it is going to be a pain in the ass. They even failed to herd the cats into upgrading the network recently. But that's because it is decentralized.

If ether were centralized, it would be fast and cheap. Scaling would be a matter of server migration. And there would be no cryptokitty congestion.

ETH's smart contracts actually brought me in. I recognized a market demand for an alternative to the bureaucratic nightmare it takes to uphold contracts. Sound money isn't just based on scarcity. Sound money is a means of upholding agreements. Legal tender is as important of a component as scarcity.
So I never had much faith in BTC or the SoV meme.

Maybe ETH won't amount to anything but cryptokitties. But it was worth a shot. If something better comes along I'll give it a shot. But it has to avoid the empty MLM trap that ether fell into. It could even be bitcoin, but I doubt it.

My advice is too keep waiting.

If you buy ETH, then you're betting it actually will successfully fork into POS.
In case you didn't notice it failed to launch an uncontroversial network upgrade recently.
Going POS will be contentious and I believe the big mining cartels will do anything to stay in power.

With that said, you have to consider the risk/reward trade off. If it does go POS, the space race should catapult ETH into the 5-6 figure area.

Personally, I'll wait for sub $50 ETH before taking the risk on 32 ETH. And I'll buy a whole bitcoin under $1,500.
