SO how bad of an idea is this?

Instead of saving a bunch of money for retirement, I intend to build with it instead.

I plan to buy a small solar array, enough to power my home for hopefully 20+ years until the panels need replaced, and have a net output of power back to the grid to earn a little income.

This would definitely be an asset. On top of that I would like to have a geothermal heating/cooling system dug/installed on the 20 or so acres behind my house.

>Utilities, water from a well, power from solar, heating from geothermal all taken care of.

My idea is that this household would be "sustainable" by it's self, i.e., not requiring constant payments to keep going. It would be a wonderful setup to retire in, assuming the house will last until I'm old.

Invest in oil now?
