China fears the power of a true bear
the only bears they have in China are adorable goofy bamboo-eaters
they wouldn't know what to do with a 1000 pound Kodiak or Polar Bear

listen dude I think pandas are cool too
but read the natgeo article I posted
they had to pay China 1 million USD panda per year. Then 600K if the pandas had a baby. Then pay for the vets, enclosures, literal tons of bamboo, etc.
so they're looking at easily 3million/year if the pandas don't have any cubs

the article I posted:
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2006/03/united-states-panda-zoo-animals/
goes through the whole thing, about how expensive those cutie bears are.

fun fact about panda cubs: they weigh as little as ~4 ounces at birth, half the weight of a human newborn
