good on them. great timing imho. There was a flood of applicants for mortgages, but I think it's a flight to use debt while it's freely available. Tangibles are great, especially if you can get the financing even if the asset itself may depreciate. There's nothing wrong with (and it's probably better to be) renting until this thing blows over, especially if you have not found a decent deal.

if you actually need a car, i would say that now is a fine time to try getting one, especially if you need to use debt. Debt is a really great tool for many people right now. If you need a car, consider it. You likely won't see the financing rates this low again for a while. Cars as assets... I don't know, i just know it's generally not advised.
