Wow. How needlessly complex. Here's a much simpler method, with a bunch less setup, and still giving serviceable results:

>Take paper plate
>Coins on plate
>Any camera will do, as long as it has a macro function. Jitter reduction also preferred.
>Take square or two of toilet paper
>Fold into 1/4s
>Hold TP over flash
>Photograph
>???
>Profit

Pic related. Quarter is AU/BU condition with a lot of mint luster still there and caught most of the diffused flash. Still came out alright.
