We are talking about 3-5 years of time frame, and it's not guaranteed that gold even follows inflation. Especially since most people try to buy it up at the start of the recession and sell it off during it. Just look at gold prices between 2000 and 2005. Absolute crab. This was a time when bonds and treasuries yielded around 6% a year with 0 risk.
