They aren't. Shutting down "the economy" kills this parasitic credit system. Yes, there will be some damage to the host, but capitalism and republican forms of governance will be just fine in the long run. Many of aristocracy will be brought to ruin though, and - as evidenced by all of the leaping off of buildings - they would rather die and/or ruin the lives of billions than become a *shudder* the working middle class.
