Because since the end of bretton woods and the gold standard the usa mantained it's reserve currecy status by acting as if that gold standard still existed.
Moderate expansion of the monetary base , after 2008 things went to shit so they could pull that trick one time since everyone knew they were acting well before.
They can't pull it again.
