I personally believe the story of Noah and the Ark, like many stories, is meant to be understood on multiple levels, or rather, it's two (or more) stories mixed into one.

the first is the story Plato was telling when he talked about Atlantis. i believe that Atlantis wasn't a single island in the Atlantic, or in the Eye of the Sahara, or even Greenland or Antarctica- I think Atlantis was a civilization on the planet that used to be between Mars and Jupiter and which is now the asteroid belt, as well as Mars and Earth (hence the Great Pyramid and the pyramids of Cydonia). this civilization destroyed itself in a war between two factions and a ship carrying a library of genetic material (an Ark) flew to Earth and possibly this is when some genetic engineering that caused a leap in human evolution occurred (increased cranial capacity, upright posture, other stuff)

I think the second story is that of the Deluge, the flood mentioned in the Bible, the Enuma Elish, the epic of Gilgamesh, and many other creation myths worldwide- the flood which ended the last phase of history and started our current cycle, either 10,500 or 12000 years ago. i personally wonder if this flood wasn't caused by the water from Marduk/Phaeton/Tiamat (the planet between Mars and Jupiter) crashing to Earth for 40 days and 40 nights...that's purely speculation though

I also think there's probably a lot I'm missing/getting wrong/mixing up but that's the gist of it
