I have now just over a year's time in my employer's 401k. I've been investing in the offered stock index investment products (all mutual funds) and company stock funds, but I have only been receiving dividends on the company stock funds. Is this normal? Do the lack of dividend payouts help make the mutual fund prices go up? I have the opportunity to open a self-directed brokerage account with TD Ameritrade and I am thinking of going that route with 90% of my contributions since they offer many commission free ETFS (including many SPDR funds) and there's no extra fees to open one.
