The jews during their Christianization of Europe followed rabbinical instructions when they threw baptism water on their enemies. That baptism water is a symbolic circumcision which "washes away" everything that is Native to the converted enemy and washes away the "filth" of his Ancestors; symbolically circumcising him away from his own people. That is why they demanded of their enemies that they absolutely must be baptised, or in other words "washed", why they thought it so absolutely crucial. Non-jews could not be converted without going through this jewish symbolic circumcision ceremony. This is also why Freemasonry has as part of the ceremonies of initiation elements where the person being initiated is "washed" in water. Same jewish origin.
