My good friend Jim Cramer of "Angry Cash" says not to gamble on earnings, you will more often than not get burned. That it used to be possible because less regulation meant traders could get the inside information to trade off of, but now it really is a gamble. And not to buy based on earnings, that you must listen to the conference call.
