401k is a retirement most companies offer their employee's. most will match the employee up to like 4-5% of what the employee puts into it. so an employee can put 5% of their gross income (pre-tax) and the company will match it. if the employee waits until they are 67 they can withdraw without paying tax on it. the money in the 401k account is put into stocks and will increase in value over time. but anyone looking to cash it out for retirement right now will probably have to work another year and wait for it come back up

Pensions are alittle similar but they are tied to specific companies, very few companies in the USA still have pensions. with a 401k you can move from job to job without it being effected, but a pension is locked at a specific company which keeps the employee from wanting to leave.
