That's easy. The stock market goes up much more than it goes down so buying immediately almost always put the probability of greater gains in your favor. The only exception to this is if you know the date of an impending crash and manage to get in at the bottom. Nobody knows that though so you're left with option one which is to get in. You may think, what if I dollar cost average? Well then you finally get all the way in and then it crashes so you still would have been better off buying all at once so at least you would have some gains before hand.
