The issue isn't that gas prices have gone up, it's that we didn't use the spoils from our own drilling (specifically, the fracking boom) to move ourselves off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible once Obama won office. It's a basic tenet of drug dealing, don't dip into your own product. We spent so much blood and gold on securing the petrodollar and didn't learn a single lesson about what it means to be beholden to it, and it's embarrassing. Even the Saudis have been better about not falling prey to the resource trap of their oil wealth.

You're very close but ultimately wrong. The issue isn't left-wing policy, it's liberal kowtowing to centrist/right-wing policy. Leftists have been warning about oil dependence for decades. Just because politicians have found ways to plug the holes they predicted would form doesn't eliminate the basic truth, which is that humanity - and certainly its leading nation - must end widespread dependence on fossil fuels to the best of our ability.
