You can thank John Maynard Keynes and FDR. Keynes' ideas saved the meltdown caused by the unrestricted free market and FDR followed his advice and taxed the wealthy to use their money to invest in the country. Keynesianism is only a temporary solution however, as capitalism will ultimately unravel with the coming mass technological displacement of labor that is the Fourth Industrial Revolution, among other things. Don't say I didn't warn you.
