Network engineer here. I've built the network pretty well and nothing really breaks. We have basically no budget so forget upgrading or anything of that sort. I'm just doing basic firewall rule changes, troubleshooting VPNs, making VIPs here and there, but for the most part Im here on standby waiting to fix the network when it breaks.

Everything you need to learn in order to get a entry level Networking job is available for free online.
You can create virtual routers and switches all day and connect and configure them how ever you want.

I'll give you two hints.
1. GNS3 (virtual networking)
2. CBTNuggets ICND1 and ICND2 (torrent this shit, and watch the videos!)

then get an entry level position, work your ass up. I did it.. and I pretty much started at around your age, maybe a couple of years younger and now im in my mid 30s. Cant write worth of shit, but i can configure gear with no issues, and 6 figs.
