>all of this bullshit assumes you have some alpha to know what the stock will do in the future
Not necessarily, a basic bitch covered call strategy has it's uses if you're sitting on shares and we're crabbing for a while. Plus if you're spamming credit spreads on a index it's not that hard to get a really basic set up going.
>spill the beans, you don't know jack shit about what anything will do
Never claimed that, nor do I even know what any given stock will do hence why I mostly spam options on indexes, future options from time to time or wheel stocks I like.
That said the only thing I do know is the SPX, RUT, NDX, and their future-options counter parts have a vague inclination to go up more so than down but it can go down from time to time. Outside of that I don't really time anything since it doesn't make sense to as Lynch would say.

I have a pill for you,
If you wish to short but not get heemed, sell credit spreads and or Puts on the VIX with a month or so out.
Idea being, the VIX always jumps to some level after some time and if the option or spread your selling has some time to it you can collect a credit if you're smart about it.

Assuming your goal is to buy and hold I'd aim for ETFs involving heavy industry like mining or manufacturing.
To add Utility ETFs are also good since we're in stagflation territory.

Personally, to add on this I would seek out ETFs with good options liquidity so you could farm some Theta off to the side with covered calls or do CSPs if possible.
