Okay so what if you fold the string to measure out 1/4 of the string length, then let 3 of the 4 quarters burn. This only uses one string though so I must be under-thinking it.

The question begs a bit of clarity: is the burn rate constant within each string? If so, my method will work. If the burn rate within each string is variable, I don't think it's possible since you get no information until it's fully consumed.
