Hope you're still around, I've been working in between chat.
Well that's mighty responsible of you, though you have a number of legal protections that are designed to ensure that bank and EULA contracts are unenforceable if they try to fuck you over.
Transfer wait times are a downside of non-bank trading. I wanted an extra $1000 in my account today for ktov, but with the weekend looming I know I won't see it transferred and usable until next Wednesday.
In terms of setup, I've got pic related, which makes it easy during market hours to keep track of my shit and time my orders a bit better. I usually do DD on center, and various tickers off to the side. Once I know how I'm gonna play it, order are made through the phone. I strongly recommend not doing the one-screen laptop if you're gonna daytrade, or at least if you do think about ways to conserve screen real estate. IDK what your money looks like, but even buying an extra monitor to plug your laptop into/extending your screen to your TV can help.

The mutual fund's a bit of an odd thing because I myself am actually curious about it. It's, for all intents and purposes, "inheritance" in the sense that it was set up by my parents when I was young and has just been the defacto money hole for when I scrape savings off my paycheques. I've massively dawdled on getting info about it: I got the brokerage to start sending portfolio email updates to me recently, and I'll be getting one in on the next quarter, but till then I don't know. Only that I had about $65k in it which dropped to ~$45k this recession (but which I'm sure will catch back up). Honestly, you're right to not get into one at this point in your life. I'm from an upper-middle class family, my mother is a physician, I'm similarly free from bills and able to go wild with my personal cash right now while still adding to this long-term mutual fund that I can't fuck with.
