As much as I would like to blame this on the general lack of competence we see around us, I'm not sure I can.

The ship was helmed by a harbor pilot who knew the channel and bridge, so the crew didn't steer wrong. Weather was decent and guide lights were on, so it wasn't a Tampa Bay Bridge repeat. Satellite navigation kept them in the channel on approach. Everything was going fine until the ship lost power.

Some observers reported they heard some sort of explosion or popping from the direction of the ship prior to its lights going out. We'll have to wait for more information, but my feeling is that one of the diesel engines failed catastrophically and sent them into the fatal drift.

Now, that in and of itself could be a competence issue in that routine maintenance and replacement schedules were ignored in the name of profit until it caused an accident that ruined the whole company. But no amount of DEI initiatives in the USA is going to make a crew of Indians on a Singaporean ship suddenly care about engine inspection.
