Wtf is the point of alt coins?

BTC goes down, people panic sell and alts go down as well.

BTC surges, people want to make BTC profits and alts go down again.

So what the fuck is the point of alt coins when they go down either way? Why wouldn't you just buy BTC low and just hold that?
