Think back to good ol´ape days, group dynamics. An animal in a herd wich can´t fight for themselves is at bottom of the hierachy --> no respect. Sad how this shit still affects the modern"thinking" human but its all biology. What helps? Abundance. don´t give a shit if they like you or not and they will flock to you. Try being a dick sometimes on purpose, just for shit and giggles and enjoy watching how the idea of you in their heads crumbles to pieces and them trying to figure out how it all fits together.. If you need an mindset " good times create weak man, hard times create strong people" how do you know being nice to them actually helps them?
