Anyone here makes money in YouTube?

Can you explain what the role of having subs is? Seems like the only way to get traffic (and thus clicks and money) is that the video shows up in the recommended section. If the algorithm decides to not do this anymore, you are fucked even if you have 1,000,000 subs.
