Canada's family court system is a dystopian nightmare. My favorite situation was Dave Foley, who got divorced when he was starring on an NBC primetime show, and thus got hit with mid-6-figure alimony. That show ended, as shows do, but the payments didn't. So that ate up all his money and pushed him into bankruptcy, but guess what isn't eliminated if you go bankrupt? Alimony. So he's broke, massively in arrears, he can't go back to Canada because there's a warrant out for his arrest for non-payment of this massive alimony that was set when he was making huge money, and it ended up with the judge, holding all of Foley's financials in his hand, saying to the prosecutor, "look, this guy does not have this sort of money, you have to be willing to make some sort of deal," and the prosecutor said, "no." They don't actually care about the money, they want wins.

The actual government gets involved to push alimony to the max, they will take all your money, and then put you in jail once you're broke.

A guy I know personally got a mini version of that -- got divorced when he was making decent money, got soaked by alimony, then got laid off with a year to go on his payments. So he had to take some shit job with a 3-hour round trip commute, got behind on his payments anyway, and they took his driver's license for being in arrears. So now he can't get to that job and earn money, so he fell behind again, and they put him in jail for 2 weeks for missing payments. Guess how much money he earned in that jail cell? It took months before he could

Do not get married in Canada unless it is to a woman much much richer than you.
