/biz/, give me some second opinions about cashing out my 401k. Before you tell me that cashing out a 401k is a dumb idea and you should never do it, listen to my story.


Been putting in 4% of my checks into my 401k at my current job for the past 2 years. I’ve accumulated about $3,000. Next month, I’m going to be leaving my job to go to a computer programming technical school(for those that are curious, the school is called 42, in the Bay Area). I’m going to have no job for the next few years, all I’ll be doing is Lyft and Uber on weekends to support myself. Obviously, I need money, and thats why I’m thinking of cashing out my 401k.

I realize that it’s a huge tax penalty, at about 30-40% of my total 401k, but i don’t have much in there anyways. I make $16 an hour right now, and if I get hired with programming skills, I’ll be making a shit ton more. I just figure it would be smarter to put money in a 401k when you actually have a high paying job.


Plus, wouldn’t a better long term investment retirement plan is just to invest in crypto, making 401k just a safe, slow NPC investment?


Help me out. Every NPC I talk to tells me cashing out my 401k is a bad idea, but I really don’t see the logic on why I shouldn’t cash it out now.
