That's a little harsh, but founded on truth. Gotta say though, over the time I've collected, the stamped copper bars have gone from $7.50/lb to at least $20/lb now. Its too bad it's so cheap. The sheer mass needed to make a dent in a portfolio even at 3x is enormous.
But I love the look of clean, polished copper.

>Wouldn't the "copper pipes" meme at that point be actually superior?
Yes and no. I finally took some piping I have and figured a 10-foot length of half-inch pipe (sells for $25 at Home Depot) weighs 2.18 lbs avdp meaning $11.50/lb, or 10+ for $20 meaning $9.20/lb. I bought bullion 1-lb and 1-kilo bars a decade ago for about $7.50/lb. Now they go for $25 or so per pound on ebay and etsy. Stupid high.
So yes, copper pipe is probably the least expensive 99.9% Cu you can buy retail. Pipe has the advantage of being readily usable.
There are two advantages to bullion: 1) it's solid, so it takes up a lot less room (and you'll need a lot to make a financial difference) and 2) it's stamped for mass and purity. And 3) I guess... it's prettier and easier to keep that way.

I haven't looked for one in a long time, but I got mine off ebay. $120 (shipping included) back then! A decent price now is a 10-pound (avdp) rounded bar at copperheadbullion

Copper *is* expensive. It has gone to just over $4/lb, and companies that make 'things' of of it have to add labor and manufacturing costs. The lowest dealer retail price I've seen is about $9.50/lb for 20 lbs of scrap wire (rotometals). Google "copper counter tops" for info on sheets. The least expensive stamped (or etched) copper bars I've seen are a 10-lb bar for $120 from Coperheadbullion and JM Bullion's 5-lb bar (not the cube) for almost $60.
But sheets... good luck.

It oxidizes so quickly though.
But polished, yeah... gorgeous!

Depends in what form, mass, and your definition of "fair."
The least expensive artsy bullion bar I can find offhand is $13.50/lb avdp for a 10 lb bar. Spot for Cu is about $3.60. So a $10/lb premium for non-scrap, presentable Cu is the lowest one can reasonably expect.

Agreed - it's something you have to consider relative to your environment. I happen to live in a wonderful neighborhood and have had PMs sent here for a dozen years with no incidents. The only oddity was the FedEx guy said everyone in the office was curious about this one brick-sized package that weighed 10 kilos. I let him know it was copper - pic related.
