Realistically in the event ofsome kind of disaster, EMP strike, financial collapse, etc. there will be 3-12 months of complete CHAOS. This means the only things that will keep you alive are

>shelter
>guns and ammo
>food water and medicine
>secondary things like fuel, generators, coffee/cigarettes/alcohol, flashlights, batteries, rope, axes, matches, lighters

The hardest part is having enough food and water. Even harder is keeping that stuff while roaming gangs go around looting everything. So you need lots of guns and lots of ammo, and more importantly a team of people to assist with this
Also youre fucked if you dont have medicine. Painkillers, antibiotics, alcohol, bandaids, gauze, vitamins. Diabetes medicine and other things that you need to not die from disease

After this 3-12 month period of CHAOS, the remaining remnants of society will attempt to rebuild. This is when gold and silver comes into play. As communities begin to rise up from the ashes and people begin farming/growing livestock/building and repairing, you can exchange your gold/silver (and also bullets/cigarettes) for services, food, tools, medicine, etc that you dont have.

So thats basically it. Remember the Chaos period, but it will not be permanently like that. At some point the dust will settle, and people will need a medium of exchange to trade goods and services with
