Laughable. It is not now a self sustaining country. It could be, clearly, since every land mass is self sustaining. Otherwise the population would be reduced to a sustainable level. This is nature. Not politics.
The argument and the point is moot considering nature has the proclivity to run its course without incentive or consequence.
Without a state to conduct or arrange it's trade internationally, Russians would simply not have bananas, would learn to produce them, or exchange them freely without the aforementioned "trade" as conducted by their government
