I disagree only on the instance of if you plan to buy and hold for a long time. I forgot which study I read but basically they did a simulation if you had invested all your money into the market the day before lehman brothers closed or the dot com bubble burst and you simply held it till today. Just the worst possible moment to invest everything. They found that if you were able to hold those positions you would still have doubled/tripled your money
