My brother is in his late 20s. Was trying to help him out with getting started with investing and I learned he basically has NOTHING saved. This is despite making ~$75k per year, living in a rented studio apt, no booze/drugs, and I'm pretty sure he hasn't dated in years.

Exactly, this is why companies with huge buybacks do so terribly. Look at Apple, they could be turning a profit if they didn't waste so much capital on buybacks. They also waste a lot of cash by just holding on to it for opportunistic buybacks.
