US healthcare is fucked up but you haven't been to other countries with universal healthcare man. Hospitals are like torture chambers.
Pic rel is what an average Greek hospital looks like. My gf recently had the flu and she tried going to the hospital, she waited +4 hours while she had high fever and she didn't get checked because there was a line of 40+ people ahead of her that had been waiting even longer. She ended up going to a private hospital and paying for the visit. Hospitals are always understaffed and most of the times there's a shortage of medical equipment and supplies. Very often, if you have to do an MRI or something like that you have to go to a private institution because the hospitals don't have it or there's an absurdly long waiting time (+1 year).
Oh, and whenever you are scheduled to have an operation of any sorts the doctors will flat out ask for money (500-3000 euros usually depending on the operation) or else they make you wait months on end to get operated.
