most factories run very automated processes. you've still got mechanics, electricians and technicians to fix shit since there is so much stuff

I work in industrial automation and yes I unironically enjoy it. I pop around to different factories for the company I work for and do small improvement projects, troubleshoot issues, in meetings with vendors, etc etc. You can either do this with a 2yr degree as a technician or as a 4yr degree engineer. it's a super niche skill and recruiters are calling me all the time.

keep at it anon - controls and ladder logic shit isn't taught in college and employers understand that. just keep applying and show initiative. I don't know what you do and don't know about the industry so I apologize if I talk you down, just trying to help. in the controls space companies tend to be either:

a) end user. think your power plant, chemical plant, pharma companies. they own and operate the factories
b) system integrators. these guys are the consultants/hired guns that will do both big and small jobs for end users. You learn the most at these places as a lot of times they are both industry agnostic and platform agnostic
c) OEM companies. these guys churn out like 1 or 2 of a very specific thing over and over (e.g. a burner system). they sell that unit as a package deal. so you're kinda working on the same thing over and over and tweaking it a little.

look at Systems integrators around your area. go to https://www.csiaexchange.com/ and just start shotgun emailing and cold calling folks "I have XYZ background and I'm interested in getting my foot in the door". good luck, if it's your kinda thing, it's a lot of fun. I'm typing this on break while I watch my crypto and stock portfolios drop the shit.. and am currently waiting to start up a huge air compressor.

I love it and can't see myself doing anything else. For me it's a mix of seeing new stuff and industries / constantly on new projects / meeting new people. there's always room for more people. Follow the advice from above. I find myself OUT OF my comfort zone a lot, which makes it all the more fun and stressful and interesting. with that said controls folks I'd say make slightly less than sitting-in-their-office "fullstack" API Azure backend database SQL whatever-the-fuck developers. but hey I'm having more fun at work so..

if you are serious in researching the world of industrial automation, let me say all this:

To work in the field, you'll typically work at a) a factory (i.e. an end user) b) a systems integrator - who is like a consulting firm and has various customers and clients in all types of industries or c) an OEM, who makes one or two specific things. I work for systems integrator. You can go to the website below and search for systems integrators in your state. You have a leg up in that you know some type of programming already, and that you're hands on. These are not 100% desk jobs, they are like 50% desk 50% field, which is why I like them. Good luck & thanks for reading my blog
