There's an ultrasonic tester that's affordable but most of us have been at this so long we can tell.

Here are other methods you can use but some of them (*) will ruin the numismatics of the piece you're testing.

>reflectivity - surface test
Grab a copper coin and a silver coin, place a tissue over them. The silver coin appears much brighter through the tissue.

>sound
Nothing rings like silver. Balance a coin in your finger and lightly tap it with another coin. Copper rings too, but you can hear the pitch difference between the metals.

>conductivity
A multimeter is $25 at home depot and the electrical properties of silver are well known.

Blasting the piece with a certain frequency of sound will cause a physical tremble within the bnb piece - much like how your house shakes when certain planes fly over.
