I started out a little over a year and a half ago with literally 500 bucks -- exact same boat as you.

I put 80% in SPY (fortune 500 index/ETF) and the rest in AMD (just any sufficiently big company that catches your interest will do when starting out). I added cash as I profited, gaining a comfortable buffer, and grew more knowledgeable.
My ROI would be much higher if it wasn't diluted from putting so much more in over the past year.
