Problem with copper is that it is actually abundant post-collapse. Most buildings have copper plumbing and copper electrical wire. You can easily salvage 20lbs from a decently sized house. That said, I would personally take copper in trades because I know it will be worth it after the dust settles.

There's plenty of options for other metals, though - the most valuable will be precious metals vital for electronics because our supply chains might be fucked enough that we decide to manufacture that kind of thing domestically. They will always retain some value, but you have a MAJOR edge collecting metals that other people don't - their demand could skyrocket through the roof in a way that gold and silver never could, because those are far more common.

Here's what I am collecting:
>Copper
Abundant and easy to work with, and countless applications, very common
>Lead
Easy to collect large quantities from gun range mounds, I use it for shooting and building batteries, but can also be traded
>Tellurium
Very hard to get your hands on (which is why I collect it), improves machinability of copper among few other applications
>aluminum
As simple as collecting recyclables, which are abundant and you can get others to collect for you to trade. Useful for industrial purposes, I have even personally cast combustion engines out of aluminum beverage containers.
>Platinum
Incredibly valuable yet easily obtainable. Buy catalytic converters chopped out of cars, crush them into dust to save space. You don't even have to refine it because recylcing from catalytic converters is common industry practice!

Gold will always be valuable for trading but its price is basically stable across time. With an ounce of gold 200 years ago you could get a full new set of clothes with boots and food for a month, and the same is true today. You should leverage trading metals to get your hands on more valuable items that will increase in value.

>worked an average of 7 hours a day, every day, for half a year
>saved every penny
>spent it traveling abroad for 14 months
>went back home after money ran out
>old job immediately hired me based on merit

Hard work pays off every time. Crypto, sometimes.
