I have done this for a stock split. Never done this in general though. I don't think it is a bad strategy per say, but moreso something to do in the face of gains during uncertainty. If I am certain there is a lot more to go up I would leave it in, why wouldn't I? And if I was certain it will go down, I would take it all out, why wouldn't I? The problem with your strategy imo is that if you have cause to sell or leave...you have cause to sell or leave it all then. I can only see what you mentioned working if a stock split happens or if you are uncertain but got a lot of gains already.
