Yeah it makes the drilling fluid heavy so gas/oil don't bubble up to surface causing a blowout.

You still need many bulker truck loads of it to mix up enough drilling fluid to drill an oil well.

Frack fluid is just made from water/sand + guar gum or xantham gum so the sand doesn't fall out of solution while pumping. You could eat it if you wanted.
